Paying employees in Arizona
When hiring employees in new states, you will need to register for relevant state tax accounts to facilitate their payment. In Arizona, you must be registered with the Arizona Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES).
Alternatively, Justworks Payroll can handle the registration process for you. We offer state tax registration services to assist with registering your business in new states. To request registration, please contact us at support@payroll.justworks.com.
Your Arizona Accounts and Rate Info
Arizona requires you to register with the Arizona Taxes Website online for both the Withholding and Unemployment accounts. Once your general AZTaxes account is created, complete any remaining prompts to register for both a withholding and unemployment account. For detailed instructions on setting up this account, please click here.
Find This Information
Locate your Arizona Withholding Account Number:
- Your Arizona State Income Tax account number assigned by the state will be identical to your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN). In order for this to be a valid account number, you must ensure you completed your state registration.
Locate your Unemployment Account Number and Tax Rate:
- You can find this account number on a previously filed Form UC-018
- Contact the AZ DES at (602) 771-6602
Entering State Tax Info in Justworks Payroll
Once you registered with the State and have a valid AZ address added to your company’s offices, you can add your account info in Justworks Payroll by navigating to:
- Company > Settings in the left navigation bar
- Under ‘Company tax info’ click into “Arizona” to edit the state tax information
In your Justworks Payroll account, you’ll want to enter your AZ Income Tax Account Number and your AZ State Unemployment Insurance Account Number. In addition to the account numbers, you’ll need to enter your AZ unemployment tax rate.
Third-party admin access
As your payroll provider, Justworks Payroll will utilize the provided account information to manage and report your AZ tax liabilities. Occasionally, the state may issue notices related to payroll taxes.
Justworks Payroll can examine these notices if granted Third-party admin access to your AZ state tax account. During onboarding, we will request that you sign state specific TPA forms, which authorizes us to handle and report your taxes to the state.
Why is this important?
Justworks Payroll calculates tax liabilities as part of payroll processing. If we cannot access your AZ state tax accounts, we must return any un-remitted tax liabilities to your company bank account, requiring you to remit and file your company’s state taxes manually.
