Paying employees in New Hampshire
When hiring employees in new states, you will need to register for relevant state tax accounts to facilitate their payment. In New Hampshire, you must be registered with the New Hampshire Employment Security (NHES) (unemployment tax). Please note that NH does not have income tax on wages and salaries.
Alternatively, Justworks Payroll can handle the registration process for you. We offer state tax registration services to assist with registering your business in new states. To request registration, please contact us at support@payroll.justworks.com.
New Hampshire Accounts Registration and Rate Info
Registering for an Unemployment Tax Account:
You can register online through New Hampshire Employment Security (NHES). Within two weeks of registering, you should receive your Employer Account Number and unemployment tax rate(s). If you need the account number sooner, call NHES the day after registering.
For registration questions, contact NHES at (603) 224-3311.
Please keep in mind that in New Hampshire, most businesses are required to pay unemployment insurance tax if they meet one of the following criteria:
- Paid $1,500 in wages within a calendar quarter, or
- Had at least one employee in New Hampshire working part of a week for 20 or more different weeks in a calendar year.
If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you will need to apply once you’ve met either of the requirements mentioned above.
Already Registered? Locate This Information
Locate Your Unemployment Account Number (Employer Account Number) and Tax Rate:
If you’ve previously run payroll in New Hampshire, you can find your Employer Account Number by checking your correspondence from New Hampshire Employment Security (NHES), such as your "Letter of Determination" or "Quarterly Tax and Wage Report." You can also call NHES at (603) 228-4038. The appearance of your account number may vary depending on the source:
- On the NHES website: It will appear as a ten-digit number, typically with four leading zeros followed by six unique digits.
- On letters from NHES: It will likely appear as a nine-digit number, often with three leading zeros followed by six unique digits.
Your unemployment tax rate can be found in the "Tax Rate Determination" letter from NHES. You can also verify your rate by calling NHES at (603) 224-3311.
Entering State Tax Info in Justworks Payroll
Once you registered with the State and have a valid NH address added to your company’s offices, you can add your account info in Justworks Payroll by navigating to:
- Company > Settings in the left navigation bar
- Under ‘Company tax info’ click into “New Hampshire” to edit the state tax information
In your Justworks Payroll account, you’ll want to enter your Unemployment Account Number and Tax Rate.
Third-party admin access
As your payroll provider, Justworks Payroll will utilize the provided account information to manage and report your NH tax liabilities. Occasionally, the state may issue notices related to payroll taxes.
Justworks Payroll can examine these notices if granted Third-party admin access to your NH state tax account. During onboarding, we will request that you sign state specific TPA forms, which authorizes us to handle and report your taxes to the state.
Why is this important?
Justworks Payroll calculates tax liabilities as part of payroll processing. If we cannot access your NH state tax accounts, we must return any unremitted tax liabilities to your company bank account, requiring you to remit and file your company’s state taxes manually.
