What is Justworks open enrollment and how does it affect me?
Open enrollment is the designated time each year when eligible employees can enroll in health insurance benefits through Justworks. Eligible new employees have an open enrollment period when they join a company during which they make their initial coverage selections. After that, open enrollment occurs once annually for eligible employees giving them an opportunity to enroll in or change coverage for the upcoming year. Open enrollment is the only time that an employee can enroll in health insurance benefits or change their coverage unless they experience a qualifying life event.
How do I enroll in health insurance benefits with Justworks?
If your company provides access to health insurance coverage through Justworks and you’re eligible, when you have the opportunity to enroll in insurance, you’ll see a notification banner at the top of your dashboard immediately upon logging into your account.
You’ll see open enrollment opportunities if you are in the annual open enrollment period for all Justworks employees, or in the 31 days after experiencing a Qualifying Life Event which allows you to enroll in or change your coverage.
First, you’ll be presented with information about the process. This information includes key dates such as enrollment deadlines, the effective date of your plan(s), and the plan year.
The following screen lists all of the steps you’ll need to complete in order to finish open enrollment. You’ll return to this dashboard after completing each step, and you’ll submit your final choices from this page at the end of the process.
Click start for medical, dental, or vision to compare specific information between plan options, such as the monthly premium, deductible, co-insurance, and network type.
Depending on which benefits your company is providing access to, you’ll follow the same process for medical, dental, and vision insurance in order to enroll or opt out. You’ll also add your dependents at this stage. Once you’ve added all dependents, you’ll indicate which ones should be enrolled in each kind of coverage.
Please keep in mind that you will be asked for you and your dependents' Social Security numbers during the enrollment workflow. If you or any of your dependents have yet to receive an SSN, you can simply enter a placeholder number such as all zeroes to push the enrollment through. Just be sure to reach back out to us as soon as you do receive the SSN.
Each time you select plans and add dependents, your progress will be saved. But keep in mind that your plan selections are not final until you go through the review and submit steps. Don’t stop until the confetti drops!
Remember that all eligible employees must go through the open enrollment period each year. Prices and plan features may change from year to year, as well as the amount of employer contributions. Go through the enrollment flow to make the best choices for you and your family, even if you plan to stay on the same plans or decline coverage altogether.
However, if you are currently enrolled in a plan through Justworks, and do not go through the open enrollment flow during the specified period, we’ll automatically enroll you and any dependents in your current plan for the upcoming plan year if your current plan is still an available option. If your current plan is no longer available, you and any dependents will be automatically enrolled in the least expensive plan available to you.
Effective Dates & Waiting Periods
Under Justworks' medical, dental, and vision plans with Aetna, the effective date of coverage will be on the first of the month after which an employee becomes eligible for such coverage.
For example, if an employee joins a company that has no waiting period on March 15th, they can enroll in plans through Justworks on their start date, but they will not be effective until April 1st. This is also true if the employees start date is the first day of the month- people who start on February 1 will wait until March 1 for their benefits to become effective.
Employers also have the option to set up 30 or 60-day waiting periods for new employees. What this means is that an employee will not be eligible for benefits until 30 or 60 days after their start date. Employees will be able to enroll in plans through Justworks following the completion of their waiting period, but the effective date will still be the first of the following month, consistent with the timeline described above.
