Once your company has set up state tax accounts under its EIN, Justworks Payroll will be able to request Power of Attorney access to file on your company’s behalf. In order to grant this access, you will need to enter your state account details into Justworks Payroll. Check out the state tax account information you will need to provide below.
State withholding number
State tax withholding refers to deductions that employers make from an employee’s paycheck for state income taxes. Each state follows its own system and state tax rates, with some states withholding no state income tax at all. In order to remit state income taxes on your company’s behalf, Justworks Payroll will need to receive your state withholding number. This is the number that’s entered on state employment tax forms to report employees’ state income tax withholdings.
State Unemployment Insurance (SUI)
You will need to enter your SUI account number and SUI rate. SUI is an employer-funded tax that funds the short-term benefits that terminated employees can apply for. Justworks Payroll will need your SUI account number to process your SUI taxes, along with your SUI tax rate, which varies by state, and may change for each employer based on historic unemployment claims
Secretary of State
Some states require businesses to register with their Secretary of State to receive a Secretary of State filing number. This number is separate from a tax identification number and required to be listed on tax forms. You will need to enter this number in your Justworks Payroll account so that we can file for your company correctly. To find this number, you can check any paperwork or receipts you received from the Secretary of State the year your company was registered. States that require Secretary of State registration: AL, DC, ID, IN, KY, LA, MO, NJ, NM, OK, UT, VT, WV
After you’ve entered these details into your Justworks Payroll account, Justworks Payroll will request Power of Attorney for the accounts provided. You may need to log into your accounts and grant this request, or sign a document granting this request that Justworks Payroll will provide. Then Justworks Payroll will be able to handle these state taxes on your behalf.
Note that you may be required to register to do business in certain states even if it is not required for payroll tax purposes. Consult your legal or tax advisor for more information.
You will be able to view and edit your state tax account information for each of the states that your company operates in, within the Settings tab under the category Company.
