Paying employees in Maryland
When hiring employees in new states, you need to register for relevant state tax accounts to facilitate their payment. In Maryland, you must be registered with the Comptroller of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Your Maryland Accounts and Rate Info
Maryland requires you to register online with the Comptroller of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Completing a “Combined Registration Application” on the Maryland Tax Connect site will allow you to register for the Employer Withholding Tax Account and Unemployment Insurance simultaneously.
You will need to provide Justworks Payroll with your Maryland Central Registration Number, Maryland Division of Unemployment Insurance Employer Number, and the Unemployment Insurance Tax Rate.
Find This Information
Locate Your Central Registration Number:
- Reviewing the letter you received from the Comptroller of Maryland after registering, or;
- Calling the agency at (410) 260-7980.
- On your Withholding Tax Returns (either Form MW506 or MW508)
- Your CRN will generally start with a 0, 1, 2, or 3.
Locate Your Maryland Division of Unemployment Insurance Employer Number:
- Refer to any notice received from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Registration (Division of Unemployment Insurance).
- Check your Unemployment Insurance Quarterly Contribution Report (Form DLLR/DUI 15).
- Look at the top of your annual tax rate notice mailed by the agency each December.
- Note that your account number will likely start with "00" or "01".
Locate your MD Unemployment Tax Rate:
- Your MD Unemployment Tax Rate is listed in the "Contribution Rate" box of your current year's Experience Rate Notice from the Maryland Department of Labor.
- If you are unsure of your rate, please call the agency at (800) 492-5524, press 1, and then 2.
Entering State Tax Info in Justworks Payroll
Once you registered with the State and have a valid MD address added to your company’s offices, you can add your account info in Justworks Payroll by navigating to:
- Company > Settings in the left navigation bar
- Under ‘Company tax info’ click into “Maryland” to edit the state tax information
Third-party admin access
As your payroll provider, Justworks Payroll will utilize the provided account information to manage and report your MD tax liabilities. Occasionally, the state may issue notices related to payroll taxes.
Justworks Payroll can examine these notices if granted Third-party admin access to your MD state tax account. During onboarding, we will request that you sign Maryland Form 548P, and other Power of Attorney authorization forms required by the state, which authorizes us to handle and report your taxes to MD state.
