This article is about Justworks Payroll. What product am I using?
Once your company has completed onboarding with Justworks Payroll, you’ll be ready to process your first payments. If you’re unsure where to begin, the steps below will guide you through the process so you can move forward with confidence.
Payroll Processing Timeline
Payroll runs on a 4-business-day timeline. Here’s what that would look like if your employees are scheduled to be paid on Tuesday, July 15, 2025:
- Thursday, July 10 – Payroll must be submitted by 2 PM EST for processing.
- Friday, July 11 – Funds are debited from your company’s bank account.
-
Tuesday, July 15 – Employees receive their payments in their bank accounts.
Important Details to Keep in Mind
- Salaried employees – Payroll runs automatically according to the set timeline.
-
Hourly employees – Payroll will only run if hours are entered before the payroll deadline.
Example: For a Monday payroll, hours must be submitted by Monday at 2 PM EST for payment to be made that Friday. - One-time payments – These also follow the 4-business-day processing timeline and must be scheduled at least 4 business days before the intended pay date.
- Business days – Monday through Friday, excluding bank holidays. If a payment is made during a holiday, processing may take longer depending on the holiday’s duration.
Payroll must be submitted by 2 PM EST on the processing date. If the cutoff is missed, you’ll need to either schedule a one-time payment for that pay period or select a later date for any supplemental payments.
Viewing Upcoming Payments
Admins with Make Payments permissions will be able to view a 60-day forecast of all scheduled payments on their Justworks Payroll dashboard under the 'Upcoming Payments' section as well as on the Payrolls page, which can be accessed via Payments > Payrolls or Pay in the left hand panel. This 60-day forecast will include all calculated payments for salaried employees as well as any scheduled one-time payments.
To view a detailed breakdown of a payroll, simply click the View Estimate button located under the Upcoming Payments section on your dashboard.
From there, you can expand the dropdown arrows next to each line item to view per-employee details, including net pay, taxes, and employer contributions.
Note: Justworks Payroll collects your company’s payroll in two separate debits: one for net employee payments and one for the associated employee and employer taxes. Together, these two debits will match the total amount listed under the Upcoming Payments section.
Viewing Processed Payments
Once the 2 PM EST processing cutoff time has passed for a scheduled payroll, the payroll will move from the ‘Upcoming payments’ field on your Justworks Payroll dashboard. This dashboard can be accessed via Payments > Payrolls or Pay in the left hand panel.
Click into past payrolls you will see a list of all the payrolls your company has processed through Justworks Payroll.
Just like within the ‘Upcoming Payments’ section, you will be able to view the details of any payroll by clicking the pay period. Similarly, you’ll be able to view a complete breakdown of the payment. You’ll now also be able to download the payroll as a csv. file.
