Background Checks with Checkr
Justworks' integration with Checkr lets you initiate, track, and review background checks directly from a member's profile — no separate vendor portal, logins, or emailed PDFs required.
Overview
Checkr is a background check provider that connects natively to Justworks. Once connected, you can run a background check on a candidate from their member profile and see status updates and results right alongside the rest of their employee record.
What you get:
- One workflow, no extra logins. Start checks, monitor status, and view results without leaving Justworks. If you already have a Checkr account, your existing reports are matched to your Justworks members when you connect, so your records are unified from day one.
- Audit-ready recordkeeping. Every check is tied to the employee record. Access is limited to admins with "Manage Employees" permissions, so there's no separate PDF archive to manage.
- Transparent, pay-per-report pricing. Starting at $29.99 per report, with no monthly subscription or minimum volume.
This integration is designed for post-offer workflows — a candidate must be added as a member in Justworks before a check can be started.
How it works
When you start a background check from a member's profile, Justworks sends Checkr the candidate's first name, last name, work state (or home state for remote employees), work city (or home city for remote employees), personal email, and optionally a phone number. Checkr processes the check and returns results (pass, fail, or pending) back to Justworks, where they're displayed on the member's profile.
Because Justworks PEPM billing only starts once a member accepts their invite — not when they're added — you can add a candidate, run a check, and hold their invite until results come back. This means there's no billing risk if a check doesn't clear.
Prerequisites
Before you get started, make sure you have:
- An active Justworks PEO or Payroll plan
- "Manage Employees" permissions in Justworks (needed to initiate checks)
- Administrator permissions in your Checkr account (needed to authorize the integration)
- US-based team members — this integration currently supports US hires only
Setting up the integration
- In Justworks, go to Company → Integrations.
- Find the Checkr card and click it.
- Click Get Started.
- You'll be redirected to Checkr to complete authorization.
- Once connected, Justworks automatically matches your existing Checkr candidates to your Justworks members and imports their historical reports onto the corresponding member profiles.
If you're an existing Checkr customer, this same flow is how you connect your current account — your historical data will be imported as part of setup.
Running a background check
Because this integration supports post-offer workflows only, here's the recommended process:
- Add the candidate as a member in Justworks, selecting Send Later when prompted to send their invite.
- Initiate the background check from their member profile.
- Once the check clears, send the invite to complete onboarding.
- If the check comes back with issues, remove the member before sending the invite — since billing hasn't started, there's no cost impact.
Pricing
Checkr uses per-report pricing with no monthly subscription or minimum volume:
| Tier | Price | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29.99/report | SSN trace, sex offender registry, global watchlist, national criminal search |
| Essential | $54.99/report | Everything in Basic, plus unlimited county criminal search |
| Complete | $89.99/report | Everything in Essential, plus unlimited state and federal criminal searches |
Add-ons such as employment verification, MVR reports, drug testing, and international checks are priced separately per check. Visit Checkr's pricing page for the current rate card. There's no additional Justworks subscription fee for this integration — you pay Checkr directly for reports.
Good to know
- This integration is US-only for now. Non-US hires should continue through your existing background check process.
- Post-offer only. Pre-offer screening isn't supported through this integration; keep using your existing vendor for that step.
- Your ATS integration is unaffected. If you run background checks through an ATS like Greenhouse or Lever, this doesn't change that workflow. The added benefit here is that the report also lives on the employee's Justworks profile for as long as they're employed — not just attached to a candidate record in your ATS.
- Your data if you leave Justworks. If you disconnect the integration, your Checkr account and historical reports stay with Checkr — you can continue managing them directly.
Frequently asked questions
Who can use this integration? Any Justworks PEO or Payroll customer.
Who does it support? All US-based team members, including full-time employees, part-time employees, and contractors.
What permissions do I need? "Manage Employees" permissions in Justworks, and administrator permissions in your Checkr account. Admins without "Manage Employees" permissions will see the Checkr card locked in the Integrations Hub.
Will my existing Checkr reports be imported? Yes. When you connect, Justworks attempts to match your Checkr candidates to Justworks members and imports their report data onto the member profile.
Can I run a check before extending an offer? Not through this integration — it's built for post-offer workflows. Use your existing vendor for pre-offer screening.
Is there an extra Justworks fee for this integration? No. The integration itself is included in your Justworks plan; you pay Checkr directly for reports.
Coming soon: pre-hire background checks
We're working on a pre-hire (V2) version of this integration to support screening earlier in the hiring process, before a candidate is added as a Justworks member. Stay tuned for more details as this rolls out.
