Newborns and newly added children: coverage, timing, SSNs, and ID cards

Newborn coverage start and timing:

Newborns are covered from their date of birth under the parent’s active plan when added timely. For ongoing enrollment, new coverage is typically set with a formal effective date (often the first of the following month), but care from the date of birth is considered covered once the child is properly enrolled and approved.

Submit the newborn’s details and QLE within 30 days of birth to avoid gaps. Once approved, expect 24–48 hours for the carrier’s systems to reflect changes.

How to add a newborn:

  • Log in to Justworks and submit a QLE for birth
  • Enter the child’s full name and date of birth
  • Select your updated coverage tier (for example, Employee + Children)
  • Upload any required documentation if requested
  • Submit for review.

Social Security Numbers for newborns or dependents without a Social Security Number yet:

You can enroll dependents even if they do not yet have Social Security Numbers (SSNs), including dependents who are currently outside the United States but will be moving to the United States. Use the temporary SSN placeholder guidance provided in your Justworks enrollment flow to submit the application. If you have multiple dependents needing placeholders, follow the instructions to use the appropriate sequence for each dependent.

Once the official SSN is issued, call Justworks Support to provide the SSN so we can update your record. For security, we only accept SSNs by phone, not by email or chat.

Costs and billing:

Your premium is based on your plan and coverage tier. Adding a child typically moves you from Employee Only to Employee + Children; costs do not vary by the number of children within that tier.

Review rates in your Justworks benefits elections or contact Support for a cost breakdown. Payroll deductions will adjust once the change processes.

ID cards and member IDs:

Carriers generally mail new ID cards 5–10 business days after the plan or change effective date. If you need an ID number sooner, use the carrier’s website or mobile app once the enrollment is active. Cards for dental and vision are issued separately by those carriers after activation.
