Can I choose a One Medical Primary Care Provider if I am on an HMO plan?
HMO plans restrict members to a narrow network of healthcare providers they can receive care from, but One Medical’s structure allows patients with HMO plans the flexibility to see multiple providers in various locations while remaining in-network. If you are a member on an HMO plan and would like to use One Medical as your Primary Care Provider, here is what you need to know:
California HMOs
If you are enrolled in a California HMO, you will first need to select an Independent Practice Association (IPA) and then designate an in-network One Medical provider as your Primary Care Physician (PCP) to use in-office services at One Medical.
- IPA selection: The IPA you select determines the service area deemed in-network by your IPA, and certain One Medical offices and providers may be out-of-network. Visit One Medical’s website to view SF Bay Area IPAs. You can make their IPA selection by calling their insurance company directly.
- PCP selection: To designate an in-network One Medical provider as your insurance PCP, you will need to call your insurance provider and select an MD or DO by name. Once you have designated a specific One Medical PCP, you will be able to use other One Medical locations and providers that are in-network within their IPA’s designated service area.
HMOs in all other states
Members enrolled in HMO plans must select a One Medical provider as their PCP in the same state where their HMO is based. Once selected, members can be seen by any One Medical provider within that state.
HMO Tips
Ensure your selection of a One Medical PCP and IPA is effective immediately or made retroactive back to the first of the month so your first visit is covered. Virtual services such as Video Chats and Treat Me Now are not billed to insurance, and established members can use those services anywhere without incurring an additional charge.
Can I visit One Medical offices in other cities?
Yes, you can visit any One Medical location in any city.
Should I sign up for One Medical if there isn’t an office in my city?
No. One Medical is not available for employees who do not live in areas where there are no One Medical offices.
