This article is about Justworks PEO. What product am I using?
A work day is a day on which an employee typically works. Work days count against time off balances when employees request time off and may count toward time off accrual, depending on your company’s time off policies.
Default work days are Monday through Friday in Justworks. However, if you have employees who typically work on different days, including weekends, you can customize their work days anytime within a 7-day span – unlocking weekend PTO, 4-day workweeks, or any combination that aligns with how your business operates.
You can set an employee’s work days for employees in two ways:
- Initially, when adding a person to your account
- Later on, when editing an employee’s profile
Customizing Work Days
You’ll find work days in the Job Information section of an employee’s profile.
To go to an employee’s profile, log into your Justworks account, find the Manage section on the left-hand navigation bar, and select Employees.
Then, select the employee’s name for which you’d like to customize work days.
Once you’re in the employee’s profile, select Job information on the left-hand side of the sub-navigation bar. Scroll down to the Work days section. Here, you can view the employee’s current work days.
To customize, select Edit. Use the checkboxes to select which days the employee typically works. Then, choose an Effective date – when the employee will see changes in their profile and when requesting PTO. We recommend aligning the effective date to the employee’s pay schedule. Last, select the Save changes button to schedule your edits.
Requesting PTO with Custom Work Days
Employees will only be able to request PTO on days considered work days. For example, if you set an employee’s work days to be Tuesday through Saturday, they can only request PTO on Tuesday through Saturday.
As an admin, you can go into an employee’s PTO request and make updates as needed – including adding PTO on days not considered work days, if you need to.
FAQs
Who can customize work days for employees?
Admins with Manage Employees permissions can customize work days.
Can I update my team’s work days in bulk or all at the same time?
No. At this time, you can only customize work days for each employee individually in Justworks (vs. by company or by group).
Will custom work days impact my employees’ PTO accrual?
If your PTO policy is on a granted upfront or unlimited policy, this will not have any impact on PTO accrual. However, if your PTO policy is on a daily accrual plan, an employee’s daily rate at which they accrue PTO may be updated based on the number of business days they are set to work per their work day selections.
Should custom workdays be used as a scheduling tool?
At this time, we do not recommend using custom work days as a scheduling tool. Instead, work days are intended to help you and your team manage PTO more accuracy and flexibility (vs. managing schedules on a week-by-week basis).
Can I customize work days for my contractors, vendors, or consultants?
No. Currently, you can only customize work days for employees (full-time, part-time, and temporary), owners (paid and unpaid), and paid interns.
How do work days impact pay periods?
Think of work days and pay periods as being two different things. Work days impact the days on which employees can request PTO and may not necessarily align with pay periods or the start of your company’s workweek. Employees will paid for the days that they worked during that pay period vs. the days set as work days in the system.
