If you’re leaving a company on Justworks, here’s some information to make your transition as smooth as possible.
Your Justworks Account
If you’ve been paid through Justworks, you will retain access to your Justworks account in perpetuity. While you will no longer have access to the company calendar and directory, you will still have access to your pay stubs, documents, and account settings- everything under the You tab from the left-side navigation menu.
You can view and download your tax forms, such as your W-2s, from your Documents Center. In your Account Settings, you can update your mailing address or choose to opt out of a paper tax form if you wish to do so.
You will also always be able to reach out to our Customer Success Team for questions. We’re available 24/7 via phone, email, and Slack.
Can’t access your account?
You may have been invited to create your Justworks account using your work email. You may have trouble logging in if you lost access to your work email and did not get a chance to add a unique home email address during your employment. To update the home email address for your account, you can contact your former company’s admin or reach out to our Customer Success Team through the following channels:
- (888) 534-1711
- support@justworks.com
- Download our Slack app
Benefits
MEDICAL, DENTAL, AND VISION
If you’re enrolled in Medical, Dental, and/or Vision coverage through Justworks, your coverage will be active until the end of the month in which your employment ended. For example, if your last day at the company were October 4th, you’d have your coverage through the end of October. If your last day at the company were October 30th, you’d only be covered through the 31st on your current plan.
COBRA INSURANCE COVERAGE CONTINUATION
Within one week of your health insurance end date, Justworks will send WageWorks (Justworks' COBRA administrator) a notice indicating your eligibility for COBRA Insurance Coverage continuation. For more information on what COBRA is, visit our COBRA Coverage page.
WageWorks will send physical COBRA election packets (as mandated by law) to your home address (as listed in Justworks). You should receive the election packet within 14 days of your health insurance end date, in accordance with the regulation. Digital packets will also be loaded into the WageWorks portal the same day they are mailed.
You can enroll in COBRA with the paper election packet or via the WageWorks portal. You have a 60-day election period to decide to enroll in coverage, and the 60-day period starts on the date that the election packet is mailed and made digitally available within the WageWorks Portal.
You may reach WageWorks by phone at 1-877-722-2667 (Monday-Friday, 8AM-8PM Eastern). You may also set up a WageWorks account online at mybenefits.wageworks.com.
Enrolled in Healthcare FSA?
You may be able to continue to use your FSA through COBRA after termination. This determination is made case by case based, in part, on how much FSA funds have been used and contributed, and must adhere to the applicable IRS rules. To find out if you are able to continue using your FSA funds please contact our Customer Service. You have 60 days from termination or the issuance date of a Medical COBRA packet, whichever is later, to request to continue utilizing your healthcare FSA through COBRA. You do not need to enroll in Medical COBRA to be eligible for COBRA FSA. Please note, FSA funds are never eligible to be used for COBRA premiums.

Unemployment Insurance
If you file for unemployment benefits, it’s important to remember that you should file with the state where you worked, even if you live in a different state.
It’s best to file as soon as you have news that your job status has changed. Each state sets its own unemployment insurance benefits eligibility guidelines, and the process to file an unemployment claim varies from state to state. You can look up each state’s unemployment website and contact information via the Department of Labor’s CareerStop.
Information You May Need to File Your Claim
*Please note: this list is not exhaustive and can vary from state to state. Claims typically require 18 months of your employment history.
- Basic Employee Information
- Your social security number
- Your driver's license or Motor Vehicle ID card number (if you have either)
- Your complete mailing address and zip code
- Your phone number
Basic Employment Information
- Names and addresses of all your employers for the last 18 months, including those in other states
- Employer Registration number or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) of your most recent employer
- Hire date
- Last day worked
- Termination date
- Pay rate
- Job title/Position
- Detailed reason for separation
Depending on your work state, you may need to use Justworks’ address/EIN on your unemployment claim instead of your worksite employer’s. (Remember, unemployment claims should be filed in the state where you work, regardless of where you live.)
In the following states (known as PEO-Reporting States), you'll need to use Justworks' name, address, and EIN on your unemployment claim:
Justworks |
|||
Alabama | Arizona | California | Colorado |
District of Columbia (DC) | Florida | Georgia | Hawaii |
Idaho | Illinois | Indiana | Kansas |
Maine | Maryland | Missouri | Montana |
New Hampshire | New Jersey | New Mexico | New York |
North Carolina | Oklahoma | Oregon | Tennessee |
Texas | Utah | Virginia | West Virginia |
Wyoming |
If your employment tenure spanned your company’s effective date on Justworks, this could impact the way you file for unemployment benefits in PEO-Reporting states. See some common scenarios below:
Scenario #1: You were hired after your former employer’s Justworks premiere date, but you have not been with the employer for more than 18 months.
-
You should submit two claims.
- 1st claim for the employment period on Justworks, with Justworks' information.
- 2nd claim for the employment period before Justworks.
Scenario #2: You were hired after/on your former employer’s Justworks premiere date, and you’ve been with the employer for more than 18 months.
- You only need to submit one claim.
- The claim is for your employment period on Justworks and should use Justworks' information.
Scenario #3: Your employment history spans from time with the same employer before your employer’s Justworks premiere date.
-
You should submit two claims.
- 1st claim for the employment period before your employer’s premiere on Justworks.
- 2nd claim for the employment period on Justworks, with Justworks' information
In the following states (known as Client-Reporting States), you'll need to use your employer's information on your unemployment claim:
Alaska | Arkansas | Connecticut | Delaware |
Iowa | Kentucky | Louisiana | Massachusetts |
Michigan | Minnesota | Mississippi | Nebraska |
Nevada | North Dakota | Ohio | Pennsylvania |
Rhode Island | South Carolina | South Dakota | Vermont |
Washington | Wisconsin |
Regardless of whether your employment tenure spanned your company’s effective date on Justworks, in Client-Reporting States:
- You only need to submit one claim.
- Once a claims specialist is assigned, the state will likely reach out to verify further information.
If your unemployment claim is approved, it can take two to three weeks after you file your claim to receive your first benefit check.
Payments
Your company can still choose to schedule and send you payments even after your termination date. Common pay types for terminated employees include severance pay and bonus/commissions, though you can still receive most payment types.
As usual, you will receive an email when you receive payment. However, this email will be sent to your home email address as listed in your Account Settings instead of the default work email address.
What if I work for another company on Justworks?
If your next company is also a Justworks customer, you still must set up a new account under that company with a unique email address. However, once you have completed your new account setup, you can merge your accounts to toggle between the two from your profile without having to log in and log out with different usernames. Please reach out to our support team to make that happen.
Please note that if you receive W-2 wages from more than one Justworks company in a calendar year, you will only receive one W-2. This is because, as a PEO, we process W-2 wages under our EIN for the companies on Justworks. The total earnings you received through Justworks that year will be included in that document. You can read more about W-2s here.
